In 1983 Nelson County Emergency Medical Services Inc. was formed and created by Joe and Eva Prewitt to produce a quality of Emergency and Non-Emergency Care and Transportation to the citizens of Nelson County.

Nelson County EMS suffered a great loss in the year of 1988 and recuperated the losses after many long hours and very dedicated employees.  We built the standing building at 1301 Atkinson Hill Ave., Bardstown and moved in February of 1989.

Nelson County EMS began as a Basic Life Support Service with four ambulances on the fleet.  At the present, Nelson County EMS, operates and is licensed by the State of Kentucky for nine Advanced Life Support Ambulances, four first response vehicles and is licensed as an Education Training Agency for the State of Kentucky.  Our Medical Director, Dr. Alan Smith, came on board with us in 1992.

Nelson County EMS is staffed with full-time and part-time EMT-Basics and EMT-Paramedics.  Amongst our employees many are instructors in various fields of First Aid and CPR, Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Prehospital Education for the Pediatric Provider, Pediatric Advanced Life Support, Basic Trauma Life Support, Farm Medical, Emergency Medical Technician First Responders, and Emergency Medical Technician Basics.  They are a vary loyal and dedicated group of employees.  These employees have great strengths and knowledge and are a very vital link to the success and quality of EMS care that the residents of Nelson County have come to know and trust.  These types of employees are necessary to continue to grow and to carry out the professional reputation that we have earned by our peers throughout the years of service.

In July of 2002 Nelson County EMS Inc. was sold to the County of Nelson government.  All employees became employees of the county and are now governed by the fiscal court.

In October of 2007 Bardstown PD dispatch and Nelson County Dispatch Center merged to form the new Nelson County Dispatch Center.  The center has new state of the art equipment and does all dispatching of police, fire, and ems for Nelson County.
